About the Project

A New Website for Nature Volunteering

We are a team of researchers at Bournemouth University who are making a new way to find volunteering conservation projects. We are building a website that enables visitors to search and find volunteer projects for nature conservation. We use a unique matching system which helps people to find projects that meet their preferences, and show where their contribution will help most. We will be working with a number of conservation organisations – both those we are in direct contact with and those we will seek out – to load projects & volunteer opportunities onto the website. Our research will investigate how different types of people enjoy different projects, suggest improvements to project design to reach new people, and encourage more volunteering in nature conservation. It's an opportunity for wider outreach and learning about citizen science and volunteering projects.

How it Works

To match to a project, a visitor to the website will enter in a few details and select their project preferences. These include approximate location ( i.e. county), their interests, and project characteristics that they would like, such as the degree of physical activity or opportunity to see wildlife. Projects will receive feedback on how they perform with different groups of people.

We will be inviting project leaders from established and upcoming citizen science programmes, and recruiting through a programme of conferences and workshops - more information will be presented on this blog when available.

This project has been supported by Bournemouth University Higher Education Innovation Funding.
